NYC Finest OR Fashion Police?

Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Fendi, Coach... Love Love Love my handbags!

Love your 1/4 price knockoffs too?  Have you ever traveled to Canal Street in Chinatown in search of the latest and greatest deal?  I know many of us are guilty and if so, you might want to read this:

NYC Chinatown district Councilwoman, Margaret Chin, plans to introduce a new bill on Thursday, April 28th for shoppers caught buying counterfeit products.  The penalty?  Jail time or $1,000.00 fine.

Why might you ask?  Margaret Chin stated, "We don't want to be known as the place to come to get counterfeit goods."  She also pointed out that monies earned by the counterfeit items were utilized for other illegal activities such as terrorism, drugs and unsafe child labor practices.

While it is unfair to promote fake merchaindise as it cheapens the real deal, this practice has been going on for years and will be difficult to crack down.  I would like to see how our heavy crime rate looks in NYC, such as drug and human trafficking, before I witness a law passed birthing real life fashion police!  After all, shouldn't every girl get the chance to have a designer bag?

*Note: the law is not in effect, but will be proposed this week.

Make your First Impression a Lasting Impression!

Let's face it - first impressions are of high importance and making a positive first impression is key in anything you do!  Here are tips to "wow" your judges:

1. Confidence - if you have confidence, you're in!  There is nothing more attractive in the human race!  So get up on that stage with your shoulders back, your smile wide and dance like you've never danced before!

2. Make Up - I have always been an advocate for make up and "pretty points."  Every woman has the ability to look beautiful & every woman needs a little make up!

Now... make up does not mean "War Paint."  You do not need to wear the color of your dress on your eyelids, but you do need to highlight your natural beauty!

   - Foundation: I would recommend the Clinique Even Better for full coverage and even toned skin.

   - Blush & Lipstick: Try a pretty pink blush to compliment your skin - I would head over to a MAC counter and ask a beauty advisor for their advice - it's quick and it's free!

   - Mascara & Eyelashes: Fake eyelashes are fabulous, as long as they're done tastefully!  Remember, we are only trying to highlight your natural beauty.  Head over to Bobbi Brown for simple lashes and Party Mascara to make those eyes pop!  They also have a great natural selection of eyeshadow (white, cream and browns) to highlight the eyes!

*Stay far away from color (unless you add a tiny accent on the lid - not a pinch more!)

3. Dress - No matter where you find your dress, make sure it fits your personality!  You can make a paper bag look fabulous so long as your happy wearing it!

Here is my Popular Pick of the Month: Megan DiBiase of The DeNogla School of Irish dance (pictured in between her loving and supportive parents, John and Mary Beth)

She is wearing a few of my favorite things:
- Gavin Doherty dress
- Estee Lauder Goddess Soft Matte Bronzer
- MAC lipstick: Frost New York Apple

Not only does this dancer look the part, she possesses a true champion's confidence!  Best of luck to Megan at the World Championships this week!

This workout is fantastic!  It uses light weights and your own body weight to tone and strengthen.  You will have a dancer body in no time!

I would recommend starting twice a week on days you will lightly practice your Irish dancing for best results.  The Bar Method is slowly opening in locations around the country, but if you cannot attend a class - try the DVD!

The Role Model of the Year Award Goes To...

CIARA SEXTON!

Ciara Sexton, 2010 All Ireland Champion, 2010 World Champion & Lead of Lord of the Dance is a true role model an inspiration to dancers and teachers globally.  For as fabulous as she is in accomplishments, she is twice as humble!

I was personally given the pleasure to share the stage with Ciara at the 2010 All Ireland Championships.  We were backstage for our first round and I kept asking the other contenders if they would like to switch rotations with me as I did not want to "battle" the stage with such an icon in the dancing industry!  After frightening the other competitors with my panic, I decided to have a chat with Ciara.  By the time we walked on stage together, our faces were beaming with delight as we had realized we made a new friendship.

Ciara won the entire competition and I came in 25th place - although we were both pleased with our placements, we were even more excited we had made a connection.  It's been over a year and thanks to Facebook messaging, I still keep in touch with this incredible woman!

The moral of the story: Irish dancing is competitive, but the Irish dancing world does not and should not revolve around competition.  Your Irish dancing experience is what you make of it and you won't make it far unless you embrace the other dancers and form life long friendships!

Let's raise our glass to Ciara - five time World Champion and true Irish dance success story!  May we all strive to be like her one day and if we don't get there, at least we made great friends along the way!

Gettin' Jiggy With It...

An Irish dance documentary created by Bankside Films, JIG, is breaking out into theaters in Europe!

"From the award winning director of My Street and Mum & Me, Jig tells the compelling story of the 40th Irish dancing world championships in Glasgow. Thousands of dancers, their families and teachers take part in the drama-filled seven day event where dance talent is pushed to the very limit in the quest for perfection."

Shout out to Petri School dancer and 2010 World Champion, Julia O'Rourke, who is featured in the documentary!  Her talented coaches, Lisa and Karen Petri of Manhasset, New York, also play roles in the film - true champion breeders!
